Recently, there has been a storm of rumors that spread from different news media channels that Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has put a ban on the bike lane program on Ferozepur Road.

But if we investigate more closely the basis of these claims, we find ourselves standing on conjecture rather than solid ground. Many articles of this nature lack the weight of official statements and have fallen into the domain of “hawai baat,” or empty rumors.

An Official Circular issued by Lahore Development Authority

To get to the bottom of it all, we spoke to LDA spokesperson and PR Officer, Osama Mehmood. He strongly rejected the rumours circulating on social media and certain sections of the press.

What’s the Actual Situation?

In Mehmood’s words:

“The suggestion that LDA has scrapped the bike lane project is unfounded, misleading and sensationalist.”

The bike lane scheme is not finished, the LDA says.

The key to this matter lies in the Lahore traffic police’s decision to remove concrete dividers at a certain stretch of Ferozepur Road because, during peak hours, traffic accidents were posing a safety risk if dividers were there.

Importantly, the bike lane itself has not been damaged at all, and is fully functional, and continues to be subject to existing statutes.

He repeated that there was no truth to the rumors of cancellation and that it had nothing to do with LDA’s actual policies.

On the Ground in Ferozepur Road

To bring clarity, our team had gone on a comprehensive survey of the Ferozepur Road bike lane, which spans from Chungi to Qaddafi Flyover.

  • From Kalma Flyover to Chungi: Concrete dividers have been removed for the safety of traffic.
  • From Kalma Flyover to Qaddafi Flyover: The divide remains large, which makes the bike lane work exactly according to its purpose.

Our team carefully annotated this path, visually marking the changes for clarity’s sake. Also, check out the attached map below:

  • Red Line – shows where the dividers have been deleted.
  • Blue Line – Indicates areas of damage where valves are intact.

Conclusion: A Final Thought

Contrary to what is being fed in all the media outlets, the Ferozepur Road bike lane has not been called off by the LDA government. The only modification done is the selective removal of the dividers by the Traffic Police for safety reasons. The bike lane remains an important part of the traffic management strategy of the city.

Unverified information spread by the media further increases the need for cautious verification of official reports.
